Tip #3- Be Positive!

imagesWe have discussed being patient and when to step back and give them some breathing room.  Now for the third tip in potty training, we need to remember to stay positive.  Like any sport,  you  must have a cheering section and so it is with potty training.  Everyone likes to hear that they are doing well and that they have someone singing their praises for what they are doing.  Nothing wrong with that at all.

You do not necessarily have to go out and adorn yourself with a cheer-leading outfit and pom-poms, it can be a simple as having a potty training chart and some stickers.  You issue them a sticker on the potty chart each time that they are successful.  This method helps the child visualize their success as they go.

Other parents use treats as rewards for potty training where others do not care to use food as a reward at all.  There is no wrong way or right way, sometimes kids will pick it up quicker using this method of using treats. You could maybe try an M&M after a successful potty run or a small toy, if you do not want to use food, at the end of the end of the day a reward is a reward.  You can use these suggestions to help you set reachable goals for your child.  (If you do not like the idea of edible treats as rewards, you can also substitute items such as stickers or temporary tattoos.)

Happy DanceAnother wonderful idea to give positive support is the “Potty Dance”.  No special steps to remember, just whatever you come up with.  Singing and dancing for successful potty trips is fun, sometimes goofy and funny, a constant interactive routine for the both of you to partake in and always a positive way to celebrate the child’s successes.  You are the only person that can assist in making potty training a fun experience or a horrible experience for your child.

Be Ready to Back Off- Tip #2

Thanks for coming back for tip #2.  Now that we have begun potty training, we as parents are ecstatic to know that it won’t be long and we will have our child diaper free!  Yeahh!  It is now time for us to find a little freedom and for them to become a little more independent.

Before long, we find that they are actually catching on and are finally going potty.  We are so excited and they go several days without any accidents.  We couldn’t be prouder of them.  Then we wake up one day and find that they have had an accident and they are regressing.  They are fighting going to the potty.  We try to encourage them to go to the potty, only to hear a great big “No!, I don’t want to.”

frustrationIt is now, that we need to step back, take a deep breath and remain calm and patient.  We know that they are able to go potty because they have done it.  The last thing that we want to happen now, is to have to start all over from the very beginning.  Let’s face it, that is exactly what is happening.  We need to back off at this point, stay consistent with them, by continuing to encouraging them to go to the potty.  It is so important not to push them and make them hate going to the potty.  That would do more harm than good for all.

Bright IdeaEventually, they will pick up right from where they left off and all will be well again.  They just need to find the interest on their own and it will be just like riding a bike.  All of a sudden a light bulb will go off in their little ole’ head and it will be like they never did forget.  What we parents go through just to get our children all grown up and potty trained!

5 Potty Training Tips: Here is #1

Potty Training Tips- There are so many out there.  For the next five weeks, I will be covering a really good tip each week for you to remember while you are potty training.  Potty tip number 1 is a very simple tip but so hard to put into play.

Potty Training- AnticipationBE PATIENT!  Yes, that means us.  There is so much pressure on us, from society, to potty train our children early, while they are still very young  in fact, and to do it quickly (sometimes in one day) that we forget what is important.  We forget to be patient with them while trying to get them potty trained,  because it is we who are tired of buying diapers or pull-ups and yes, we who are so ready to move on to the next stage.  Maybe it is we that are in so much anticipation of success and freedom from diapers, not them!  Hhhmmm!?  Something to think about, right?

No matter how we look at it, no matter how old they are, they will only potty train when and if they are ready.  Ultimately, they control the situation and we need to remember that it is okay.   It is then that we need not to scream and holler, or say things that to our children may sound just mean and hurtful but to let them learn at their own pace.

successIt really is okay.  It usually does not happen overnight, although there are exceptions to every rule.  Some kids will catch on with hardly any help at all but most of them have a mind of their own.  Remember to tell yourself before starting, it may take days, weeks or even months to accomplish what you are about to begin.  In the end, it will happen no matter what the time frame and you and your child will feel relieved.

A Step Stool is a Handy Tool!

Wooden Step Stool- Magic GardenEvery household should have a step stool handy for their child to use especially in their bathrooms during Potty Training.  A step stool is a very handy tool and has at least 2 wonderful purposes during this process in a child’s life.  One is to offer the child a helping hand as well as a sense of security and independence.  The second is to help the child with a good health and hygiene regiment.  Let’s take a look at these two a little more closely.

When a child is potty training, the one thing that we are trying to teach them is to be independent.  To be able to go to the potty on their own, pull their training pants up and down by themselves, without needing any or very little help from us at all.  Once they have accomplished this and they are potty trained, it is time to move them on to the adult size potty using the potty reducer to make them feel more secure.  One of the problems with this step is that some of the children find that they can not hop up on the seat without much difficulty or the feeling that they might fall in.  This is when our step stools come in handy.  They can step up to the seat and just sit down all by themselves, with no assistance at all.  The stool also serves another purpose,  it allows the child to place his feet on the top step, not only making them more stable but give them a secure feeling.  When their little legs are just dangling, they tend to swing them side to side or back and forth, therefore creating unbalance and sometimes a feeling that they might just fall into the bowl.

Once they are finished going to the potty, they are taught to wash their hands.  Ooops!  Sometimes we forget that they are still little people and need help.  Some may not be able to reach the sink without a lot of difficulty and therefore would need the convenience of a stool.  With the use of a stool of appropriate height for them, they would again become independent and do things for themselves.

Stools come in many different shapes, sizes and heights.  Most of the one step children stools are around 8 inches high, with the 2-step stools right at 14 inch-total height.  They come in plastic and wood of many colors and some of them even have a place for your child to store things.  Like anything else you must find one that fits the needs of both you and your child.

Which Potty Training Pants should I buy?

It is starting to warm up outside and I can’t say it enough, “I am so glad!”  I personally have had enough of the cold weather and am loving the warm days that we are having at this time.  Due to the warming up of the weather, I am receiving more phone calls than usual,  from parents that are preparing themselves for the wonderful process called “Potty Training“.  The main topic seems to be “Which Training Pants should I buy?”

Most of them are aware already, that going from the paper product pull-ups to cotton training pants, is the first step to potty training.  The pull-ups are designed to keep the child as dry as possible no matter how many times they have accidents in them.  They wick away the moisture from the child’s bottom.  The cotton training pants on the other hand, will make the child feel wet and hopefully uncomfortable, so that they will be motivated to go to the potty in order to stay dry.  We can only hope!

We at RNK carry several kinds of training pants.  Our cotton training pants are thicker than most brands that you can buy in the stores and are available in blue (Potty Scotty) print,  Pink (Potty Patty) print, solid white and some colorful prints as well.  These training pants are designed to catch most of an accident in the thick center portion of the training pant but may not contain all of it.  Should you want help in containing most, if not all of the accident (and I say most because there are some accidents that no matter how hard you try, you just can’t contain all of it),  we recommend that you also use our waterproof pull-on pants to go over the top of them.  (Our pull on pants are not vinyl but are made out of a special waterproof PUL fabric, so you do not hear the rustling like the vinyl ones.)

Should you decide to use the cotton training pants, you will find that they are wonderful because once the child is potty trained, the training pant can also be used like regular underwear.  Be prepared because there will be many times that your child will wait until the last minute to go to the potty.   As they hurry on the way there, they may tinkle just a bit before reaching the potty.  Using this thicker cotton training pant should absorb that slight accident so that it does not go through to their clothing. and therefore saving them from an embarrassing moment.

2in1-Training-Pants-Scotty2_600x6002in1-Waterproof-Training-Pants-Patty_600x600If you do not like having to work with 2 separate items, then our 2-in-1 training pants are more for you.  They give you the convenience of the cotton training pant and the waterproof pull-on all built into one.  These are for daytime potty training just as the cotton training pants are.  They also come in the Blue Potty Scotty and Pink Potty Patty prints.

Bamboo-Waterproof-Training-Pants_600x600Minky-Waterproof-Training-Pants_600x600We have recently introduced some of our new waterproof training pants to our site.  These training pants come in a variety of prints but stand out because the outer PUL fabric is made up of 2 very special materials (bamboo and a very soft minky fabric).  All our waterproof training pants are perfect for potty training your child.

Night-Time-Training-Pants-n_600x600Once your child is day potty trained, you will have to watch for signs that will let you know that they are ready for night time training.  One of the most important signs to look for is that your child is waking up dry or almost dry several days out of the week.  This should be a sign that his/her little bladder has gained enough strength to hold it most, if not all night long until morning.  Once the child has showed this sign, you might want to try our night time training pants.  They are a little bulkier than the day time training pants because night time accidents are usually heavier than those during the day.  For easy night time changing, they are manufactured with 2 sets of snaps down both sides.  The second set of snaps also gives you the ability to increase or decrease the waist size of the training pant.

I strongly suggest that you use not just the weight chart that you see on the site but the measurement chart as well.  Using both increases the chance that the training pants will fit your child.  Good luck with your potty training days ahead and call me should you need any further assistance.

Winter Weather – Affecting shipping

Winter Storm 2Brrrrr!  We are in the south and we think that it has been cold here. However, it has not been as cold here as it is in the North and Eastern part of the United States.  We have heard daily how terrible the weather is for everyone there and how much snow they have received.  Some of them are just like we are, they do not see snow much, therefore do not have the ability to clean off the roads to make them safe for travel and they are finding themselves in a real predicament.

With this being said, it just amazes me that some people do not understand why their packages in that area are being delayed.  It is quite clear that the roads are a hazard to be on and that the safety of the delivery drivers is and should be of first concern.  It seems like people in our world today Winter Storm 3are so caught up in living in this fast paced world, that seems to be open 24/7, 365 days a year that we forget that not everything will always work as we assume it will.  Stay safe and warm.  Be thankful that we are not dealing with Mother Nature right now, in our neck of the woods that is!

Small Business Award Scam?!

award pictureAwards!  Everyone likes to be recognized for what they work hard to accomplish but at what cost.  We received a couple of emails this week to let us know that our Potty Training Concepts Website and our Potty Patty site were receiving awards from the Pearland Award Program.  Since our warehouse is located in Pearland, Texas, they had our most undivided attention, so we read on.  It sounded really legitimate until we started seeing the red flags.

In the email, it read “The Pearland Award Program has chosen Potty Training Concepts for the 2013 Pearland Awards in the Toys classification.” and if you examine the award closely, it is recognizing Potty Training Concepts for its “Toys”, really?  I didn’t know that is what we specialized in, go figure.    Upon further inspection, we noticed that the phone number was a 1-888 number.  Why if the city of Pearland was honoring us with this award would it have a 1-888 number.  Hmmm?!  Then we decided to do some research on the web to find out all about the awards program that we could.  The email stated that we could display our award on our sites and have one sent to our office as well so that we could display it proudly.  All we had to do was give them a call.   Upon reading the information we found during our research, had we called they would have asked us for money to pay for the award.  Not happening!

You decide, is it a scam?  (  Would you pay for your award?

We at Potty Training Concepts have found an article from the BBB that you might want to read and it includes some really great tips.

*Learn everything you can about who is giving the award.  If it is coming from a mystery company, chances are it simply wants your money.

*If you didn’t apply for an award or the group cannot tell you how you were nominated, chances are the award is not legitimate.

*Most legitimate awards do not come with costs for the recipient.  If there is a cost, scrutinize it even more closely.

*Ask specific questions about how your company or organization was chosen for an award and find out how many similar awards are given each year.

*Check BBB reliability reports at or by calling 800-356-1007.

Bamboo vs. Cotton

Bamboo-Waterproof-Training-Pants_600x600We recently added a new training pant to our site.  These 2 in 1 waterproof training pants are made out of a bamboo fabric.  I had a customer who asked me this week what I could tell her about bamboo vs. cotton.

This is what I learned in my research of the two:

bamboo-stalksBamboo : *Soft and comfortable,  it is softer than cotton, more like the texture of a silk or cashmere.

*It absorbs moisture quickly and wicks it away faster than cotton.

*It dries in about half the time of cotton.

*Keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

*It has a unique anti-bacterial fiber quality that makes it anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and odor resistant plus this fiber does not fade as quickly as cotton.

cottonCotton  : * It is a natural fiber as well.

*It is the most common used natural fabric throughout the world.

*It is a very strong and durable fabric, very comfortable to wear.

*It absorbs moisture well keeping you cool in the summer.
